Musk’s public acknowledgment that Tesla received generous memory allocations at fair prices confirms what analysts have suspected: memory chips are now the limiting factor in AI infrastructure. Alphabet has raised its capital expenditure plans for the current year, another sign that demand for AI hardware continues to outstrip supply.

The bull case rests on this structural scarcity. Micron has stated that HBM capacity is effectively sold out through the end of 2026, backed by multi-year supply agreements with key customers. TrendForce estimates that HBM will account for roughly 30 percent of all DRAM wafer starts by 2027, crowding out conventional DRAM production and reinforcing manufacturers’ pricing power. IDC projects only 16 percent growth in DRAM supply for 2026 — well below historical averages — as producers shift wafer capacity toward AI memory and high-capacity DDR5 modules.

Nvidia’s upcoming “Vera Rubin” platform is expected to require significantly more HBM per chip than previous generations, which would tighten supply further. A broader NAND flash shortage in 2026, as forecast by TrendForce, could extend Micron’s pricing power across its entire product portfolio.

The consensus analyst price target stands at 1,325.79 euros, implying upside of more than 55 percent from current levels. The secondary source puts the target at 1,312.22 euros, a 50.9 percent potential gain. Both figures represent expectations, not guarantees.

The Bear Case: When New Capacity Meets Normalizing Demand

The counterargument centers on timing. Samsung is set to begin production at a new plant in Pyeongtaek in 2028. SK Hynix is building HBM and packaging facilities slated to come online by the end of 2028, plus an HBM fab in Cheongju, South Korea, with completion in 2027. Several analysts warn explicitly about the collision of new capacity with potentially moderating demand.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

The risk is that the industry’s collective investment catches up with demand just as growth normalizes. Historical patterns in semiconductors show that customers often double-order during extreme scarcity to secure supply, creating artificial demand spikes followed by inventory gluts.

There are already warning signs. NAND flash stocks have fallen on concerns that AI-driven demand will normalize. Micron’s 30 percent pullback from its June high shows how sensitively the stock reacts to any crack in the scarcity narrative, even as fundamentals remain strong.

Alphabet posted negative free cash flow in its most recent quarter — a direct consequence of the massive investments that also fuel Micron’s revenue. If investors begin punishing hyperscalers for high spending without quick returns, a capex correction could follow.

Volatility Tells the Real Story

The technical indicators capture the uncertainty. The relative strength index sits at 51.0, signaling neutrality. But the annualized 30-day volatility of roughly 101 to 105 percent tells a different story: the market is deeply unsettled about which scenario will prevail.
