Nvidia’s Twin Engines: A $2 Billion Networking Bet and a Server CPU Gambit

Nvidia shares climbed 3.01 percent on Tuesday to €187.36, pushing the chipmaker’s market capitalisation past $4.3 trillion. The gain came as the company’s new Vera Rubin superchips and GB300 systems began rolling off production lines at a freshly minted Wistron facility in Fort Worth, Texas — a $700 million investment that opened on July 21, 2026.

The stock now sits 7.48 percent below its 52-week high of €202.50, hit on May 14. That gap captures the tension at the heart of Nvidia’s current story: a company extending its dominance into new hardware categories while navigating an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

The Networking Moat Widens

The bull case starts with a transformation already underway. Nvidia has quietly become the world’s leading supplier of Ethernet switching for data centres, powered by its Spectrum-X platform. That business generated a record quarterly revenue run rate of more than $2 billion, according to industry reports.

The strategic shift is from pure chip designer to full-stack provider for what the company calls “AI factories.” By bundling GPUs with high-speed networking and its proprietary CUDA software layer, Nvidia creates an integrated package that rivals selling discrete components struggle to match. This diversification is reflected in the analyst consensus, which pegs a price target of €264.89 — implying upside of roughly 42 percent from current levels.

Production of the Blackwell B200 and B300 platforms is expected to account for more than 70 percent of all high-end GPU shipments by the second half of 2026. As long as enterprise adoption of agentic AI applications continues to accelerate, the argument goes, demand for this integrated infrastructure should sustain the stock’s 16.11 percent year-to-date gain — even with geopolitical headwinds building.

The Vera CPU: A New Frontier

Tuesday’s rally had a more immediate catalyst: the start of production for Nvidia’s Vera Rubin superchips, which incorporate the company’s own ARM-based Vera central processor. This marks a direct assault on a market long dominated by x86 chips from Intel and AMD.

Early benchmarks are striking. Nvidia claims its Vera CPU executes Python code up to 1.8 times faster than AMD’s competing Epyc Turin processor. More tellingly, cloud operator CoreWeave reported a tenfold improvement in token output per watt when running the DeepSeek-R1 model on the new platform compared with the previous-generation Grace Blackwell system.

That efficiency gain could trigger what economists call the Jevons paradox: as the cost of running AI workloads falls, total demand actually rises rather than contracts. If hyperscalers and enterprise customers embrace the integrated Vera-Rubin platform, Nvidia opens a revenue stream that extends well beyond its existing GPU stronghold.

Institutional investors are taking note. Simplicity Wealth LLC added to its position in the first quarter, and on Wednesday Zacks Research upgraded the stock to “Strong Buy,” citing solid fundamentals.

The Risks: Regulation, Capacity and Competition

The bear case is equally layered. The most immediate threat comes from Washington. The US administration is reportedly developing a global licensing framework for advanced AI accelerators, transforming existing country-specific export restrictions into a worldwide pre-approval system. Companies would need specific clearance for large shipments of chips like Nvidia’s Blackwell series. Should the Commerce Department introduce on-site inspections or disclosure requirements tied to GPU thresholds, the pace of AI buildout in neutral and non-aligned countries could slow markedly.

Beyond geopolitics lie physical constraints. Data centre power demand in the US could reach 66 gigawatts by 2027 — more than double current levels. If electricity grids or capital markets reach a saturation point where returns on billion-dollar AI clusters begin to flatten, the €202.50 high could prove stubborn resistance. Nvidia’s annualised volatility of 34.56 percent underscores how sensitive the stock is to any signal that hyperscaler capital expenditure is hitting financial or physical limits.

On the competitive front, AMD is not standing still. The rival is offering its Helios rack systems to major customers including Microsoft Azure and has secured a significant AI compute deal with Anthropic. If key clients diversify their hardware suppliers to reduce single-vendor dependency, Nvidia’s pricing power would erode.

Cost pressures are also building. TSMC, Nvidia’s manufacturing partner, plans price increases of up to 10 percent starting in 2027, which would directly squeeze hardware margins.

The Technical Picture

The 50-day moving average sits at €181.41, providing a critical support level. With the relative strength index at 57.6, the stock has room to run before becoming overbought. A sustained hold above that moving average would support the continuation of the uptrend. Below it, the 200-day average at €165.90 looms as the next line of defence.

The next major catalyst arrives in late August, when Nvidia reports second-quarter earnings. Investors will be watching for sequential revenue growth and, crucially, whether the Vera CPU is already contributing meaningfully to the top line. That data point should determine whether the server CPU bet becomes a genuine pillar of the business — or remains an intriguing experiment.
