Deutsche Telekom at an Inflection Point: Buyback Expiry and T-Mobile US M&A Chatter Collide

Deutsche Telekom’s stock is entering a critical stretch with one of its key supports about to vanish. The second tranche of the company’s share buyback programme expires on 30 June, removing a guaranteed buyer that had been absorbing up to €550 million of equity. With the shares trading at €26.10 — barely 1.5% above the 52-week low hit on 22 June — the loss of that cushion leaves the stock exposed at a moment when sentiment is already fragile.

Compounding the technical pressure is a fresh wave of speculation around T‑Mobile US, the American subsidiary that accounts for roughly two‑thirds of group revenue and in which Deutsche Telekom holds a 53% stake. A report from Seeking Alpha on 25 June suggested that SpaceX is weighing a full acquisition of the US carrier, aiming to merge mobile and satellite technology on a global platform. TD Cowen analyst Gregory Williams went further, arguing that if SpaceX cannot find a smaller infrastructure deal, it could jump straight into the mobile market via T‑Mobile US. Williams also suspects the Bonn‑based group is already bracing for a potential bid, pointing to a Wall Street Journal report that CEO Tim Höttges is considering a tighter holding structure with the US unit. No official confirmation has been given.

A separate regulatory overhang adds another layer of uncertainty. The Bundesnetzagentur is running a nationwide mobile‑network stress test until 1 July, using a crowdsourcing app that asks citizens to log their real‑world reception quality. Deutsche Telekom says its 5G network covers more than 99% of the population, but by area roughly 12.1% of the country still lacked 5G at the end of 2025 and 7.5% lacked 4G. If the crowd‑sourced data reveals significant gaps, political pressure could rise for costly rural expansion — an unwanted distraction for the balance sheet.

All of this makes for a stark contrast with the operational picture. In the first quarter of 2026, organic revenue rose 4.7% to €29.9 billion, while adjusted EBITDA after leasing climbed 7.5% to €11.5 billion. Management responded by raising full‑year guidance: adjusted EBITDA AL is now expected around €47.5 billion, with free cash flow after leasing exceeding €19.8 billion. The German home market also delivered a bright spot during the football World Cup. MagentaTV, the only platform showing all 104 matches live and 44 exclusively, recorded more than 36 million viewers in the first week alone. Subscription sales hit an all‑time high — more than double the level reached during the 2024 European Championship.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Meanwhile the fibre rollout continues at pace. In May alone, the network added 173,000 new fibre connections, bringing the total number of households and businesses that can access speeds of up to 2 Gbps to 13.2 million. Mobile data traffic is rising roughly 30% year‑on‑year, driven by streaming, social media and a growing share of AI applications. New mobile sites recently became operational in Hünfeld, Görwihl and Leverkusen.

Yet the stock has been deaf to that progress. Year‑to‑date it has shed around 6.4%, while over twelve months the decline approaches 16%. The relative strength index stands at 32.5 — deep in oversold territory but unable to spark a meaningful bounce. At €26.10, the shares are roughly 23% below their 52‑week high of €34.35.

Investors now have one clear date on the calendar: 6 August, when Deutsche Telekom reports second‑quarter results. That is when management will have to address the US strategy head‑on — whether the holding‑structure rumour has any substance, and how the group would respond to a potential SpaceX approach. Until then, the absence of buyback support leaves the stock trading without its familiar safety net, at the mercy of transatlantic headlines.
