Take-Two Interactive: A Pivotal Earnings Call Nears as Institutional Giants Bet Big

The countdown to May 21 is on, and for Take-Two Interactive, this earnings release carries weight far beyond the usual quarterly numbers. When CEO Strauss Zelnick takes the stage after the closing bell, investors will be laser-focused on one thing: the fate of Grand Theft Auto VI, the most anticipated video game of the decade.

The management has already signaled it will unveil a three-year financial forecast stretching to fiscal 2029, a rare glimpse into the company’s long-term trajectory. The burning question is whether the November 19 release date for GTA VI holds firm. Zelnick has kept the pricing strategy deliberately vague, leaving the market to speculate on what could be a record-setting launch.

A Handcrafted Rebuttal to Musk

Zelnick recently waded into a debate with Elon Musk, pushing back hard against the Tesla CEO’s claim that artificial intelligence could churn out complex games in minutes. GTA VI, Zelnick insists, remains “handcrafted.” While he acknowledges AI can assist with asset creation and developer productivity, he argues that creativity itself cannot be automated. In a pointed retort, he suggested that if AI were to replace leadership roles, Musk’s own position would be more vulnerable than those of creative professionals.

Institutional Accumulation vs. Insider Caution

The stock’s recent performance tells a mixed story. Trading at around €187, the shares have slipped nearly 13% since the start of the year and sit roughly 17% below their 52-week high from October 2025. Yet the institutional crowd is moving in the opposite direction.

The Vanguard Group has been steadily building its position, now holding approximately 21.8 million shares after a 4.5% increase in the third quarter of 2025. Even more dramatic was M&T Bank Corp’s move in the fourth quarter: the bank added 321,023 shares, effectively multiplying its stake by over 5,000%. Between them, institutional investors and hedge funds now command the vast majority of outstanding stock.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Take-Two?

The insider picture is starkly different. Over the past three months, executives have sold shares worth more than $13.5 million, with not a single insider purchase recorded. Zelnick himself offloaded roughly 65,000 shares in the last 90 days, netting nearly $14 million — including a block of 52,054 shares at an average price of $214.40. Board member Ellen Siminoff’s mid-April sale added to the pattern. While insider selling doesn’t necessarily signal bearish conviction, the one-way flow is hard to ignore.

The Operating Engine

The fundamentals provide some ballast. Last quarter, net bookings hit $1.76 billion, comfortably beating expectations, prompting management to raise the full-year forecast to around $6.8 billion — an 18% increase from the original target. Operating cash flow for the year is projected at $450 million.

Analysts remain broadly constructive. The consensus rating is “Moderate Buy,” with a median price target of $284.31 — well above current levels. Wells Fargo recently trimmed its target slightly to $293 but kept its positive stance.

The November Catalyst

All roads lead to November 19. If Zelnick confirms the release schedule on May 21, a major overhang on the stock lifts. The three-year outlook and fiscal 2027 guidance will frame the financial expectations for what management itself calls the most important product cycle in the company’s history. Whether GTA VI can deliver on the lofty ambitions baked into that $284 analyst target will only become clear in the weeks following launch.
