A significant expansion in user accessibility is underway for autonomous vehicle company Pony AI. Starting March 13, residents of the Chinese megacity Guangzhou gained the ability to book robotaxi rides directly through the WeChat super-app. This move effectively opens the service to WeChat’s user base of over one billion people, integrating driverless mobility more deeply into daily life across China.
Financial Performance in Focus
Despite this operational advancement, Pony AI’s shares have faced recent pressure. By mid-March, the stock was trading below both its short-term 20-day and long-term 100-day moving averages. The market appears to be awaiting more concrete evidence of the business model’s economic viability, with a particular focus on achieving profitability at individual operational sites.
All eyes are now on the upcoming financial report scheduled for release on March 26, 2026, which will cover the fourth quarter of 2025. Investors are expected to scrutinize key metrics, including any increase in ride frequency attributable to the new WeChat platform and further progress on operational efficiency. This follows recent reports from Shenzhen indicating initial positive contribution margins.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Pony AI?
Strategic Expansion and Tencent Partnership
The integration into WeChat’s “Mobility Services” portal is not an isolated development but the result of a deepening strategic alliance. The foundation was laid in April 2025 through a partnership with Tencent Cloud, focusing on collaborative efforts in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and mapping technology. Plans are in place to further extend the service to Tencent Maps in the near future, aiming to boost visibility among commuters.
This partnership supports an aggressive growth target: Pony AI intends to more than double its fleet to over 3,000 vehicles by the end of 2026. The current fleet consists of approximately 1,159 units already deployed in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The company employs an asset-light model to maintain a focus on technological development during this expansion. Internationally, Pony AI is also exploring opportunities, conducting test runs in the Middle East and in Luxembourg.
