Broadcom’s AI Ambition Fuels Unprecedented Growth Trajectory

Long viewed as a steady infrastructure provider, Broadcom has decisively transformed into a high-growth engine powered by artificial intelligence. Recent financial results underscore this shift, moving beyond market speculation about cycle longevity to deliver concrete evidence: revenue from its AI semiconductor segment more than doubled. For investors, the most compelling narrative lies in the forward guidance, with management forecasting an even steeper growth curve for the current quarter.

Financial Outlook Signals Accelerating Momentum

Market reaction is being driven primarily by the company’s robust forecast. CEO Hock Tan projected second-quarter revenue of approximately $22 billion. This figure represents a year-over-year increase of 47%, marking a significant acceleration from the 29% growth recorded in the prior quarter.

The confidence stems from a concrete pipeline of prominent clients. Broadcom continues to supply Google with its seventh-generation TPU chips, with the next generation already slated for 2027. Similarly, substantial capacity expansions are underway for Anthropic and OpenAI. CEO Tan revealed that OpenAI plans to operate over a gigawatt of computing power with its first generation of proprietary chips starting in 2027. These long-term partnerships provide Broadcom with considerable visibility, further supported by secured supply agreements for key components extending through 2028.

Custom AI Chips Drive Record Performance

The record quarter was fueled not by classic networking products alone, but predominantly by explosive demand for custom silicon, or Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). In the first fiscal quarter of 2026, AI semiconductor revenue surged 106% to $8.4 billion.

The “Custom Silicon” business, involving chips tailored for major cloud providers’ specific requirements, outperformed with a 140% increase. The company benefits from a strategic focus on open standards like Ethernet, which facilitates scaling for large hyperscalers as they encounter limitations with proprietary interconnect solutions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Broadcom?

Looking ahead, management expects AI-related revenue to jump another 140% in the current quarter to $10.7 billion. While the stock has already anticipated some of this growth, gaining over 71% in the past 12 months, it currently trades approximately 19% below its 52-week high following a recent pullback.

Robust Profitability Funds Shareholder Returns

The high-margin business model is reflected in strong profitability metrics. The operating margin expanded to 66.4%, generating free cash flow exceeding $8 billion. These funds are being returned directly to shareholders. Alongside a quarterly dividend of $0.65 per share, the board authorized a new stock repurchase program of up to $10 billion, effective through the end of 2026.

Despite investor concerns that generative AI might threaten traditional software operations, this segment remained stable with $6.8 billion in revenue. Tan emphasized that the company’s infrastructure software is not being displaced by AI technologies.

A Clear Long-Term Vision

Broadcom is steering toward an ambitious long-term target. CEO Hock Tan envisions a clear path to generating over $100 billion in revenue solely from AI chips by the year 2027. With secured supply chains through 2028 and the addition of OpenAI to its customer roster, Broadcom is reinforcing its claim to be, alongside Nvidia, a central pillar of the global AI infrastructure.
