Rocket Lab’s Record Results Overshadowed by Neutron Rocket Delay

Rocket Lab USA announced its strongest financial performance to date, yet investor focus was captured by a significant schedule revision for its next-generation launch vehicle. The company’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results showcased substantial growth, but a technical setback with the Neutron rocket’s development has introduced a new element of caution into the market narrative.

Financial Performance Hits New Highs

For the final quarter of 2025, the space systems company reported record revenue of $179.7 million, representing a 36% year-over-year increase. Full-year revenue reached $601.8 million, a 38% jump from the prior year. The company posted a net loss of $0.09 per share, a figure that slightly outperformed market expectations.

The operational backlog surged dramatically, climbing 73% to $1.85 billion. A significant contributor was an $816 million satellite contract from the Space Development Agency, described by management as the largest single award in Rocket Lab’s history.

Looking ahead, guidance for the first quarter of 2026 remains robust, with projected revenue between $185 million and $200 million and a GAAP gross margin around 35%. The company ended the year with a strong liquidity position, holding $828.7 million in cash and marketable securities.

Neutron Schedule Slip Dominates Discussion

During the earnings conference call, executives disclosed that the inaugural flight of the Neutron rocket is now targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, a delay from prior timelines. The shift follows a test anomaly involving a first-stage fuel tank, attributed to a manufacturing defect from an external hand-lamination process.

In response, the company is already fabricating a new tank using an Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) machine, a method intended to fully eliminate the previous flaw. Rocket Lab also indicated plans for minor design tweaks to enhance safety margins and simplify manufacturing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab USA?

Chief Financial Officer Adam Spice noted that research and development spending for Neutron is expected to peak in Q1 2026, with focus shifting later in the year toward inventory for “Flight Two.”

Strategic Advances and Analyst Reactions

Beyond the financials, Rocket Lab highlighted several operational milestones. A successful hypersonic test mission for the Defense Innovation Unit was conducted in late February using its HASTE rocket. Furthermore, the company completed commissioning for two satellites built for the University of California Berkeley’s ESCAPADE mission; both spacecraft are already operational at the Earth-Sun Lagrange point L2, ahead of their planned journey to Mars.

The company continues to pursue vertical integration through acquisitions. Recent purchases include Precision Components Limited in Auckland, which will form a new “Auckland Machine Complex” to supply components for Neutron, and Rocket Lab Optical Support, Inc. (OSI), a provider of high-precision optical and opto-mechanical instruments.

The market reaction to the earnings report was negative, largely driven by the Neutron delay. Shares closed at $68.87, down 2.96%.

Analyst responses were mixed. Needham maintained a Buy rating but reduced its price target to $95 from $110. Citizens JMP pointed to strong revenue and backlog but cited execution and valuation risks, keeping a Market Perform rating. Cantor Fitzgerald emphasized the company’s scaling potential and contract momentum as long-term drivers.

Despite impressive contract wins and improving margins in its Space Systems division, Rocket Lab’s immediate challenge is clear. Successfully resolving the Neutron’s technical issues through the revised manufacturing process and design adjustments will be the central storyline until the new target launch date in late 2026.
