The path to groundbreaking for Vulcan Energy Resources’ flagship lithium and geothermal project in Germany is now clear. The company has successfully navigated the critical permitting process and secured full financing, positioning its innovative Lionheart venture on the cusp of its construction phase.

A Milestone in Financing and Permits

A comprehensive €2.2 billion funding package was finalized by Vulcan Energy in late 2025, ensuring the complete financing for the project’s initial stage. This financial closure was made possible by a series of key regulatory approvals granted throughout the second half of that year. The green light for the geothermal power plant was received in June, followed by the permit for the central lithium plant in Frankfurt during September. Final authorization for the lithium extraction facility in Landau was secured in November.

Successful Test Paves the Way

The technical viability of the project received a significant boost in January 2026. Vulcan Energy announced the successful production test of its first new Lionheart well, designated LSC-1b. Operational results met or exceeded the development plan’s assumptions, providing strong validation for the integrated extraction method.

Strategic Timing in Supportive Markets

The project’s launch coincides with favorable dynamics in both the geothermal and lithium sectors. Geothermal energy is witnessing increased investment, valued as a reliable, low-carbon source of baseload power that enhances energy independence and grid stability. Concurrently, the lithium market is showing initial signs of recovery from a period of oversupply. Prices began rising again in early 2026, fueled by anticipated demand from the electric vehicle and energy storage industries. Europe’s strategic push for regional battery material supply chains offers long-term structural support for ventures like Vulcan’s.

The Road Ahead: From Planning to Production

With capital and permits in hand, the focus shifts squarely to execution. Vulcan Energy’s model aims to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide with a net-zero carbon footprint by extracting lithium from geothermal brine. The parallel process will also generate renewable energy and heat.

The first phase of the Lionheart project is designed for an annual output of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate. This volume is estimated to be sufficient for approximately 500,000 electric vehicle batteries. The company has already established a binding offtake agreement with commodities giant Glencore.
